SCRANTON, PA–Dec. 20, 2012 — In an agreement signed on Dec. 19, 2012, AZEK Building Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of CPG International, has completed the acquisition of VAST Enterprises, LLC (Minneapolis, MN) manufacturers of AZEK Pavers (formerly AZEK VAST Pavers).  In September 2011, AZEK Building Products had purchased an interest in VAST and, through a strategic alliance, marketed the pavers to AZEK’s extensive distribution network.

Stain Resistant AZEK Deck Chosen for Balcony Decks

Scranton, PA – For a year and a half, a condo association struggled with how to replace a worn, 800 sq. ft. pressure treated deck on the rooftop of a 10-story condo building in downtown Milwaukee, WI, as well as 34 balcony decks.  The rooftop deck had become almost impossible to maintain , requiring a more durable surface while keeping the original metal joists.  The replacement project typically would have been time and labor intensive, especially the demolition.  However, contractor Milt Charno was able to save the condo association about $9,000 by resurfacing the existing deck with AZEK VAST Pavers.  

Made with up to 95% recycled scrap tires and various plastics, AZEK VAST Pavers were relatively new to the national home building market when Charno, owner of Decks by Milt Charno & Associates, discovered them at last year’s DeckExpo in Chicago. After some research, he discovered the pavers provided a solution that would stay within budget.  The condo board was thrilled about the cost savings and the lower maintenance.  “I realized the deck was just pressure treated, so we could go right over it with the AZEK VAST Resurfacing Pavers,” he said.  “Leaving the old deck in saved us about $9,000 over conventional decking.”

Charno said the pavers were easy to install, saving substantial time and labor.  They fit into an innovative grid system and, unlike conventional concrete pavers, require no special tools or wet saws.  “We were actually able to cut around metal pipes, which you could never do with concrete pavers,” said Charno.  The best part?  No demolition, removal or disposal needed for the old deck.  After inspecting it for structural stability, Charno and his crew were able to the affix the grids to the wood on the outer edges and then snugly lay in the paver pattern.  They did use extra screws for the grids because of the extreme height of the project.

The renovated rooftop deck now offers condo residents a party space for day or nighttime fun and relaxation, along with views of the river and festival fireworks, while eliminating the worry of on-going maintenance.

For the balcony deck renovations, Charno selected stain- and scratch-resistant AZEK Deck as another way to reduce long term maintenance costs for the condo association.  He was even able to use leftover deck pieces to build a beautiful AZEK bench for the rooftop paver deck.
